Employee Giving Programs

In Your Community

Giving Programs & Partnerships

Washington Mutual employees give thousands of hours of volunteer time and millions of dollars in donations to their communities each year. We encourage our employees to donate their time and energy to help their communities—employees who work 20 hours or more per week are eligible for up to 12 hours of paid time off each quarter to do volunteer work.

Our volunteer and giving programs include:

CAN! Committed Active Neighbors® program
CAN! Cash™ program
Matching Gift program
Employee Giving Campaign

CAN! Committed Active Neighbors® program
Washington Mutual is committed to making our communities better places to live, learn and work; it's part of our history and part of our culture.

What started as a small group of employees volunteering their time at bake sales to raise funds for local hospitals has grown into a fully staffed fundraising and volunteer program: the CAN! Committed Active Neighbors program.

The success of the CAN! program comes from our dedicated employees, who volunteer to do things such as:

  • Deliver financial education presentations to kids and adults
  • Help with local fundraisers
  • Join together to collect school supplies for children in local schools
  • Raise funds internally by staffing bake sales, zucchini races and scavenger hunts to support schools

We also partner with local nonprofits to provide books, toys and food to those in need in our communities; we paint, build fences, mow lawns, plant trees and flowers, and clean up or create community gardens. And when disaster strikes, we assist with disaster relief efforts through volunteering and giving efforts.

To further encourage employees to contribute their time, talents and resources, we offer annual corporate-sponsored events such as Financial Education Initiative, Day of Caring and the annual Employee Giving Campaign.

We encourage schools and nonprofits to help us help you! Most tax-exempt groups are eligible to have a Washington Mutual volunteer work for them. Your group can apply for volunteer support by sending a message to can@wamu.net.

CAN! Cash™ program
As a part of Washington Mutual's continuing commitment to service, we provide both the people and the money to improve our children's schools and better our communities through the CAN! Cash program.

The CAN! Cash program recognizes employee volunteer time through the donation of cash grants to nonprofits or schools in which employees volunteer. For every 20 qualified volunteer hours reported by a Washington Mutual employee, we will donate $100 to a nonprofit or school with which the employee volunteered. Employees can request up to $1,000 each calendar year for the nonprofits or schools of their choice.

Our employees do everything from weeding gardens to tutoring children to helping with affordable housing projects. Washington Mutual is proud of its volunteers and of their commitment to making our communities a better place to live and learn. The CAN! Cash program is a great way for Washington Mutual employees to support education and their communities.

We encourage schools and nonprofits to help us help you! Most tax-exempt groups are eligible to have a Washington Mutual employees volunteer for them. Your group can apply for volunteer support by sending a message to can@wamu.net. (Grant information can be found at Corporate Giving.)

Matching Gift program
Washington Mutual doubles the value of employee donations to qualified nonprofits. We match employee cash, check or securities contributions dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000 per employee each year.

Employee Giving Campaign
Each year, Washington Mutual's Employee Giving Campaign gives employees a convenient way to support causes they believe in. Whether an employee makes a one-time gift or sets up monthly payroll donations through the annual Campaign, Washington Mutual will match the employee's gift—up to $10,000 each year—with a donation to any qualified organization they chose to support.
