Our competitive benefits package is designed to offer you a wide range of health, retirement and career-oriented benefits.

Health
WaMu offers a variety of health and wellness benefits so that eligible employees may select the ones that best fit their needs.

  • Medical: Choose from several coverage options, including a PPO with a $250, $550 or $1,000 deductible, a nationwide HMO and several regional HMOs that vary according to the state where you live.
  • Dental: Receive benefits of 50 to 100 percent of the cost of diagnostic, preventive and restorative care.
  • Flexible spending accounts: Set aside money from your pay on a tax-free basis and use those funds to reimburse yourself for eligible health care and dependent daycare expenses.
  • Life insurance: Receive company-paid basic life insurance and elect supplemental coverage that fits your needs.
  • Short-term disability program: Following 180 consecutive days of employment, this company-paid program provides partial income replacement—60 percent of your assigned weekly earnings for up to 25 weeks—should you experience a qualified and approved non-work-related illness or injury, including a pregnancy-related disability.
  • Long-term disability plan: Following six months of service, this company-paid program provides up to 60 percent of your basic monthly earnings after 180 days of qualifying disability.
  • Wellness and work/life programs: Tools and resources that put you in control of your personal health, lifestyle and work/life balance from Healthy Rewards (an incentive program) to a Work/Life Assistance program to a tobacco cessation program.

Retirement and more
At WaMu, you may qualify to get more than your paycheck in recognition of your hard work.

  • WaMu Savings Plan, the 401(k): Defer up to 75 percent of your eligible pre-tax earnings (up to federal maximums) when you start work at WaMu. On the first day of the month following your completion of one year of service, you start receiving a company match on a percentage of your eligible earnings you contribute (up to 4 percent).
  • WaMu Pension Plan: Accrue company-paid benefits automatically as of the first day of the quarter following one year of employment with 1,000 hours of service at WaMu. Your benefits in the plan grow through Benefit Credits based on your eligible compensation and years of service and through Interest Credits.
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan: Purchase Washington Mutual, Inc. common stock at a five percent (5%) discount as of any quarterly purchase date following your date of hire, if you work at least 20 hours per week for a minimum of five months per year.
  • Employee discounts: From premium free checking to home loan discounts, you can benefit from the special discounts offered to WaMu employees.

  • Learning and development: WaMu offers a variety of leadership education and professional and career development opportunities to help you maximize your talents and grow in your career.
  • Volunteering and giving: WaMu encourages employees to give back to their communities. WaMu offers eligible employees up to twelve hours of paid time off to volunteer each quarter. Through the Matching Gift program, WaMu matches employee donations to qualified nonprofits—up to $10,000 per employee each year.
  • Vacation: Eligible employees receive two to five weeks each year, depending on years of service.
  • Holidays: Eligible full-time employees enjoy 80 hours each year.
  • Incidental illness time: Eligible full-time employees receive up to seven days (56 hours) at the start of every year to use to care for their own illness/injury or that of a qualified family member. Eligible part-time employees receive a prorated amount of incidental illness time based on their standard hours assignment.
