Why Work at WaMu?

We have a simple philosophy: Everyone should be treated with dignity and respect.

This simple approach has been in practice for years at Washington Mutual. We're committed to creating a work environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

Great customer service—inside and out
Customer service is a top priority here. We realize that our customers don't want to talk to uptight bankers; they want a friendly smile, fast service and respect—all backed by knowledge and expertise. Every department at Washington Mutual has internal and external customers, and our goal is to provide consistently outstanding service. That difference makes Washington Mutual a great place to bank and a great place to work.

The value of your commitment
At Washington Mutual, what you accomplish is more important than your title. We believe in providing our employees with an environment where they can achieve their goals—both in terms of customer service and career growth. That's why we offer great benefits to reward hard work. But don't just take our word for it—see what our employees have to say about working at WaMu.

Community involvement
We think it's important to support the communities in which we do business and we encourage our employees to get involved in local community activities. If you work for Washington Mutual and qualify, we'll match your eligible charitable contributions up to $10,000 a year. And for every 20 qualified volunteer hours you report, WaMu will give a $100 CAN! Cash grant to one of the organizations with which you’ve volunteered, up to $1,000 per year.

Your Choice, Your Opportunity

Be an innovator
Our business focus is to better serve our customers. We do this in two ways:  by developing products that are innovative and cost effective and by hiring the best people and encouraging their professional development. For example, we offer an award winning management trainee program that focuses on consumer and residential lending, business development, and management techniques.

WaMu is expanding, with more than 200 locations opening each year for the last several years. It's the kind of growth that can only be made possible by innovation—the kind of innovation that can change an entire industry. It's been more than a decade since WaMu became the first major bank to offer free checking, and today we're continuing a tradition of strategic innovation with these new initiatives:

  • By acquiring Providian Financial in October 2005, we became one of the largest providers of consumer credit cards in the country.
  • By creating a new Regional Operations Center in San Antonio, TX, we will improve efficiencies and provide better customer satisfaction while creating 4200 new jobs over the next several years.
  • By continuing to expand our network of unique Occasio™ branches. Instead of the teller windows and high counters found in most banks, these branches greet customers with an open and welcoming environment more like a retail store than a financial center.

Be a trailblazer
If you can help us better serve our customers, we'd like to talk to you. We know that innovation, growth and personal service make it possible for us—and you—to succeed. Find out why WaMu is the ideal place for you.
