Why aren't signatures required for PayPass™?

To ensure that using PayPass™ is as simple and convenient as cash, retailers/merchants that accept PayPass do not require you to sign for small purchases (under $25). However, for your protection, purchases over $25 generally require a signature or PIN to be used.
